Earlier this month Rachel from Save'n'Sail had the pleasure of experiencing the Cunard product for the first time.

Here is a review from her westbound transatlantic voyage to New york onboard Queen Mary 2.

Its not very often you can say your next holiday is on Queen Mary 2 across the Atlantic to New York City, I was ready to embark on the voyage of a lifetime.

As
I arrived at the QE2 Terminal at Southampton I was to be greeted by the most amazing ship, or as was corrected vessel I have ever seen. I could not believe I was embarking on a Voyage so many people throughout history had the pleasure of sailing.

I felt like royalty walking onto Queen Mary 2, greeted by the signature White Star Line crew .As I approached the balcony I could not believe my eyes as I looked down on the Grand Lobby. I was on a ship ( I had to keep reminding myself )

I was looking forward to my cabin on board, I had a balcony! All-though obstructed I found it to be very enjoyable. On a Transatlantic Crossing the view of the outside was somewhat different to your other cruises, as all you could see was the Ocean wave. My cabin steward, Nicholas was a delight no job to small for him, excellent service throughout even though I never seemed to see him! The nightly turn down service was a great favourite of mine I got to have my very own Cunard chocolates.

I was wondering whilst on board what I would do with my days for 6 days with no ports of call! Well I was certainly proved wrong. From one day to the next I was stuck for choice do I attend a lecture in Maritime History, Film or
Reading? A computer course for beginners, a weight loss programme from Cunard's Canyon Ranch Spa, Fine arts auction, and browse through one of the biggest library’s afloat; travel through space with Tom Hanks in the Planetarium, the list goes on.

I was beginning to imagine I would not fit all these activities in but I certainly managed a few. I had the pleasure of attending a RADA workshop ( Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts ) which made you let loose the inner you express yourself like no other, quite inspiring actually, you did find yourself throughout the voyage repeating the chants and shouts but gladly you were not on your own. The evening's entertainment was excellent with performances and activities to suit everybody.

Winter Garden and the Commodore Club offered a very formal experience, a Harpist, Violinist, Pianist; the soaring sounds were not quite my ideal evening so I opted for the more casual entertainment on board in the Golden Lion Pub. I must admit I almost felt a home playing a pub quiz and watching England V France in the
Rugby but at home I did not have the chance to attend a cracking performance from The Royal Court Theatre  ”Rock Opera ".  G32 became a very popular late night venue to enjoy a host of different music from the onboard DJ!

Dining on Queen Mary 2 left you spoilt for choice. All three sections of Kings Court gave you the option of a casual breakfast, a late lunch or if you were just feeling peckish in the evening. Lotus served Asian cuisine while the car vary section served traditional British menu's but you certainly were spoilt after dining in the Britannia and Todd English restaurant.  The Waiters could not do enough for you, we had a birthday onboard and every effort was made to make it extra special.

Todd English gave you a more intimate dining experience, if you were celebrating a special occasion I strongly suggest you pay a small supplement to dine in this lovely restaurant.

W eventually arrived in New York City at 4.00am, I was first up rushing to the top deck to catch a glimpse of the Big Apple, everybody had the same idea of course, but it was that extra special sharing the same experience with the rest of the passengers.

We sailed gracefully under the VerrazanoBridge slowly approaching New York, it was simply amazing. We sailed passed the City about 6.00am to dock in Brooklyn. It was then time to say goodbye to Queen Mary 2 and discover the sights and sounds of New York City! Disembarkation ran very smoothly as you were called deck by deck so there were never any crowds or rushing about.

I strongly suggest you stay in New York for a couple of nights as your flight home does not really give you the luxury in exploring the great city.

I thoroughly enjoyed my entire Voyage on Cunard's Queen Mary 2 and certainly recommend to anyone looking for that something different, Extra Special and most of all memorable experience.
