Royal Caribbean announces new smoking policy on its fleet

Moving towards a Smoke Free environment

Royal Caribbean's Vitality Wellness Program Continues To Bring a Breath of Fresh Air Fleetwide

In time to help guests set their New Year's resolutions for a healthier lifestyle, Royal Caribbean International announces a new smoking policy onboard its ships, effective from January 2008.

To bolster the cruise line's new Vitality wellbeing programme, recently debuted on Liberty of the Seas - the newest vessel to share the title of the world's largest cruise ship with sister-ship, Freedom of the Seas - Royal Caribbean International is increasing smoke-free zones by designating all staterooms and one lounge on each ship in its fleet as non-smoking areas.

The new policy will go into effect onboard 18 of the line's 21 ships initially, with Legend of the Seas, Rhapsody of the Seas and Splendour of the Seas following suit with the 2008 summer season.

I honestly don't think one lounge is enough for the non smokers, even though I welcome the fact that they are not allowing smoking in the staterooms.

We were on the Navigator on the 2 day trip to Paris in April and felt like 'billy no mates' as we didn't like to sit in the smoking sections.

Hi All
Royal Caribbean seem to be going in the opposite direction to other cruise companies by trying to attract smokers, which is odd as the Yanks are so against smoking.
On my last trip 8 wks ago on Sea Princess most lounges were none smoking, or smoking on the Port side only where you could get a seat quite easily as most passengers wanted the none smoking areas.
I realy fancy a cruise with Royal Carib but if I'm restricted as a none smoker to just one lounge, NO WAY!!!

Having just come back of a cruise on Navigator of the Seas with 3,800 passengers! I have to say that unless you went into the pub on the royal promenade I did not notice smoke whilst in any bars.
I am a non smoker also, but in the bar areas smoking was restricted to small areas. For example the Schooner bar smoking area was limited to a few tables next to the Casino.
But I agree it would be a suggestion to have a couple of bars that are fully non smoking.

Royal Caribean should take a leaf out of Costas book. On their ships all inside bars and public areas are smoke free apart from one bar at the top of the ship known as the Cognac & Cigar. Very civilised.
