Ventura Cruise Review the very latest from P&O Cruises new ship Ventura.

Good afternoon Phil,
My wife and I have just returned from Ventura Mediterranean Legacies Cruise on Sunday. We were absolutely delighted with every aspect apart from one of our Cruise, and, easily would rate it our best ever holiday. In case you expect a sting in the tail regarding the one aspect we did not like, I will cover it first. Simply, the smoking policy of allowing smoking in The Exchange was awful. I am not totally anti smoking but after we have been free of it in public places for quite a while in the UK now it was something we are just not used too. However, I understand from a colleague who is sailing on the next Ventura Cruise departing October 10 that smoking is not allowed from that cruise onwards. I am sure that this is the correct decision.
Maybe bullet points would be most concise:-
- On line booking, registration of passport etc, subsequent booking of shore excursions seamless.
- Check in and embarkation excellent although, admittedly, we were there early.
- Quality of cabin, first class
- Public rooms, stunning, particularly, Metropolis, Ramblas and Havana. Loved The Exchange where we had live football, Ryder Cup Golf etc but subject to the caveat about smoking.
- Now, the big hot potato, Freedom Dining, for us it worked very well, we have always though that first sitting is too early and second too late so freedom dining allowed us to address this. I know that is at odds with your view that there should be no advance booking but, the passengers on our cruise who preferred to walk in were experiencing no problems. I really hope that P&O commit to making Freedom Dining work because the knives are out amongst the 'traditional' cruisers who prefer fixed sitting and assigned table.
- The food was superb, beautifully prepared, hot, impeccably served and a good variety of choice and dishes over the cruise.
- Service in the bars was good and the prices of the drinks, as ever with P&O, most reasonable.
- Entertainment was great and particularly the policy of flying new performers out to join the ship ensured variety. And, the highlight KevOrkian, what can I say about him?, he received standing ovations in The Arena at both the shows we attended in which he appeared.
- Comedy Club was good for us although I am not sure how well it was going down with some passengers.
- Another real bonus, the guest lecturer, Air Traffic Control Specialist Phil Holt, most interesting and entertaining.
- Ports on this cruise were absolutely first class, and the excursions, particularly the tours called Introduction to Rome and Introduction to Florence were good. The best thing was they combined guided sight seeing then adequate free time.
- You may hear adverse comment about the tour to FC Barcelona's Nou Camp stadium but as it had been so high on my top 100 things to do I just loved every minute of it.
To conclude, we would say that this cruise exceeded all our expectations by a substantial margin, the only odd thing to me is the frequency that your hear three comments, albeit that you are hearing the first one ever less frequently with the passage of the years.
- 'Oh she is not The Canberra, that was our favourite' - Agreed she is not the Canberra, I loved the Canberra as well and had four great cruises on her in the 1980's but the market has changed beyond all recognition, and, for the better.
- 'The ship is too big' - Well for me that is just not so, Ventura's size is not an issue.
- 'The Oriana is a nicer ship' - Again, no the Oriana is not a nicer ship she is a different ship.
I hope Phil that you may find my comments of interest and should you decide to post this on the blog I hope your clients/readers will find the comments interesting.
John
Phil's comment: Thank you John for this superb review. I think this has put most of the demons to bed now and Ventura really is well and truly settling down and a great addition to the P&O Cruises fleet.
Also I am glad yo utouched on the Freedom Dining - I agree that more people are looking to eat when convenient and it appears finally that this has been addressed on Ventura and I don not expect to hear any further adverse comments moving into the winter Caribbean program - especially as I am holidaying on her with my family and friends in Feb 09..!!
On Freedom Dining..!!!!!!!!!!
